Electricity Authority of Cyprus unions to escalate industrial action from Thursday while maintaining power supply

Trade unions representing workers at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) have announced an escalation of their industrial action starting Thursday, with assurances that electricity generation will continue without interruption. The unions emphasized that only essential safety personnel will be present at power stations to ensure stability throughout the protest.

Kyriacos Tafounas, president of the Epopai trade union, stated that any increase in electricity demand or operational needs will be managed by the Transmission System Operator, who will take responsibility for the system’s stability. The unions’ action aims to draw attention to concerns about electricity supply adequacy and the high cost of electricity for consumers.

Tafounas also called for the EAC to be allowed to purchase more affordable electricity from private renewable energy producers and stressed the need for expanding photovoltaic installations alongside energy storage systems to maintain network efficiency and stability.
