Cyprus aims for 85,000 electric vehicles by 2030 amid rising adoption rates

Cyprus is targeting 85,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads by 2030, a goal set by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades. Despite currently having the lowest EV adoption rate in the European Union at 0.77%, recent data indicates progress, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) making up 4.7% of new registrations in 2025, up from previous years. The total number of licensed EVs, including motorcycles and buses, stands at approximately 8,200.

Challenges remain, including limited public charging infrastructure historically dominated by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, though private operators and new regulations are expanding access. Government subsidies have been pivotal but inconsistent, with recent schemes providing substantial grants, yet public confusion and deadline pressures have impacted uptake. Industry voices call for clearer, long-term subsidy plans to encourage buyers.

Experts highlight that increased education about EV benefits, affordability improvements, and infrastructure expansion are crucial for meeting goals. Factors like EU emissions trading and tariff impacts on imports also influence the market. While Cyprus faces hurdles, industry insiders remain optimistic about accelerated EV adoption as awareness and infrastructure improve.
