🌍 Turkey demands EU-Turkey progress before Cyprus talks, plans new infrastructure in occupied north

Turkey has insisted on seeing concrete progress in EU-Turkish relations before engaging in substantive discussions on the Cyprus issue. Ankara is prioritizing the upgrade of the Customs Union, visa liberalization for Turkish citizens, and safeguards for Turkish Cypriots. Meanwhile, Turkish officials accuse Nicosia of militarizing the conflict and allege a strategic encirclement plot against Turkey involving Cyprus, Greece, France, and Israel.

High-level talks involving EU representatives and Turkish officials continue, with further discussions expected at the NATO summit in July. However, EU member states remain skeptical about Turkey's willingness to align with European principles. Concurrently, Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot administration are advancing infrastructure projects in the occupied north, including port developments and modernization plans for airports and roads.

A significant new radar and vessel traffic services system is set to become operational near the Karpasia region on July 20, coinciding with the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion. This system aims to enhance Turkey’s maritime and air monitoring capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean and will be inaugurated with President Erdogan in attendance.
