Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas commemorated the five military officers who tragically died in a helicopter crash near Kouklia in 2002, marking their sacrifice as a potent symbol of duty and commitment. The officers lost their lives when the helicopter, carrying National Guard leadership for a military exercise, malfunctioned and caught fire.

Speaking at the annual memorial service, Palmas highlighted the significance of their sacrifice, noting that it underscores the enduring responsibilities and solemn commitments tied to military service. He described the officers as symbols of honour and guardianship, whose memory continues to inspire dedication to Cyprus’s freedom and security.

The minister emphasized that their legacy is especially meaningful today, as public service and values face increasing challenges. The memorial featuring five eagles stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of discipline, service, and sacrifice for future generations in safeguarding the Republic.
