🪦 30th Anniversary of Turkish Cypriot Journalist Kutlu Adali's Assassination Remains Unsolved
On July 6, 1996, Turkish Cypriot journalist Kutlu Adali was fatally shot outside his home in Nicosia, marking the first of several politically charged deaths during one of Cyprus' most violent summers since 1974. Adali's assassination is widely viewed as a calculated act of retaliation for his investigative articles exposing a controversial armed robbery at Famagusta’s St Barnabas monastery, where valuable artifacts were stolen under unclear circumstances involving Turkish Cypriot authorities.
Despite police investigations, no suspects have ever been charged, with Adali’s widow successfully appealing to the European Court of Human Rights over an inadequate probe. Various theories have implicated nationalist groups such as the Grey Wolves and the Turkish Revenge Brigade. In 2021, claims emerged from gang leader Sedat Peker alleging involvement by Turkish officials, sparking political calls for renewed investigations. However, 30 years later, the case remains unresolved, leaving the motives and perpetrators behind Adali’s murder shrouded in mystery.
