👮 Turkish Cypriot leader says property issue cannot be resolved through lawsuits following Lithuanian broker's arrest in France

The 53-year-old Lithuanian real estate broker arrested in France on a European arrest warrant issued by the Republic of Cyprus will be extradited to Cyprus, according to the Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. Speaking in response to the arrest, Erhürman stated that the property dispute cannot be settled through lawsuits filed by Greek Cypriots against Turkish Cypriots or vice versa, as the issue is part of the broader political conflict.

Erhürman criticized the Greek Cypriot leadership for using legal means as political leverage instead of pursuing genuine solutions. He highlighted the ongoing lack of action from the Greek Cypriot side regarding the property commission meant for restoration, exchange, and compensation. Meanwhile, statements from the Turkish Cypriot "Foreign Ministry" condemned what they called the exploitation of legal mechanisms such as the European Arrest Warrant and Interpol to advance unilateral actions by the Republic of Cyprus.

Sila Usar Izmirli, head of the Republican Turkish Party, echoed the sentiment that the property matter is fundamental to the Cyprus dispute and cannot be addressed through isolated arrests or lawsuits. She warned that the misuse of legal tools turns the rule of law into a weapon for political objectives, undermining justice and peace efforts on the island.
