🌦️ Alona Community Council urges urgent probe into drying springs threatening Pitsilia's water resources
The Alona Community Council has called for an immediate investigation by the Water Development Department into the alarming drying of local springs, notably the "Vrysi ton Poulion" spring, and the broader critical state of water resources in Alona and the Pitsilia region. Despite increased rainfall in 2026 temporarily restoring spring flow, the rapid recent drying raises serious concerns beyond drought effects.
The council highlighted visible environmental impacts, including dying plane trees and degradation of the Natura 2000-protected Alona forest, stressing that these water shortages risk the area's ecosystem, biodiversity, and community sustainability. They cited previous reports urging improved water resource management and requested a thorough hydrogeological assessment, investigation into new drilling licenses, and clarity on underground water reserves.
Demonstrating a collaborative approach, the council seeks cooperation with government bodies to identify sustainable solutions while awaiting prompt action and clear communication from relevant authorities. Copies of their concerns have been sent to various ministries and parliamentary committees to prioritize this environmental emergency.
