👮 Police Union Calls for Psychological Evaluations with Service Weapon Certification Renewals
The president of the police union Isotita, Nikos Loizides, has urged that the renewal of service weapon certifications should include periodic psychological evaluations of officers. Currently, certification renewals every five years assess only technical skills in weapon handling, with no mental health assessments involved.
Loizides emphasized that psychological tests are administered only during recruitment and not throughout officers' careers. Following a recent incident where a police officer used his service weapon in an attempted murder of his wife, he suggested more frequent evaluations every three years paired with interviews by police psychologists to detect any mental health concerns or psychological overload.
He also outlined current procedures for addressing mental health issues among officers, including supervisor referrals to police psychologists, voluntary mental health support, and the withdrawal of weapons based on relevant medical certificates. A circular promoting mental health services and confidential counseling was distributed to all police members on June 22 to support officers’ well-being.
