👮 Cyprus Drug Enforcement Busts Organised Group Smuggling Opium Poppy
The Drug Enforcement Service (YKAN) of Cyprus launched an intensive operation on 19 June 2026, successfully dismantling an organised crime group involved in smuggling and distributing large quantities of Papaver somniferum (opium poppy). The crackdown uncovered 17 interconnected cases nationwide, leading to 21 defendants being held in custody on remand.
Prosecutors have referred 16 of these cases to the Criminal Court for trial. Investigators also gathered evidence charging three detained suspects with additional smuggling activities over the past three months. YKAN has intensified measures, including collaborating with a foreign courier company to block shipments of these narcotics to Cyprus.
This comprehensive operation is part of YKAN's ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and prevent the illegal importation of harmful substances into the Republic of Cyprus, enhancing public safety across the island.
