⛪ Church of Cyprus launches financial support scheme to boost third and subsequent births among Greek Orthodox families
The Church of Cyprus has commenced the implementation of its "Scheme for Countering Low Birth Rates," targeting an increase in births of third and subsequent children specifically within Greek Orthodox families. This initiative responds to concerns over a declining fertility rate of approximately 1.4 and an aging population, which threatens social sustainability and the island's demographic balance.
Eligible families, where at least one parent is a Cypriot Orthodox Christian, can receive financial aid starting retroactively from children born on or after January 1, 2025. Benefits include lump-sum payments at key life stages: €1,500 at baptism, and €1,000 upon registration at primary, junior high, and high school. Additionally, families will receive annual food and necessity vouchers every Easter and Christmas.
Applications are submitted exclusively through a dedicated digital platform, with eligibility requiring documentation such as marriage and baptism certificates, proof of residency, and school enrollment records. The program operates with an estimated annual budget between €1.8 million and €2.8 million for 2025–2029, with a planned evaluation in March 2029 to assess impact and guide further measures.
