Turkish Cypriot leader condemns Turkish Cypriot isolation in diplomacy, culture, and sport
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman has sent letters to the UN Secretary-General, European Commission President, and Barcelona FC President expressing concerns over what he describes as the obstruction of Turkish Cypriots in diplomatic, cultural, and sporting arenas. He highlighted recent events as contrary to UN appeals for efforts to restore trust between communities on the island.
Erhurman criticized the Republic's actions, including the cancellation of a children's football camp licensed by Barcelona FC and a music festival in Kyrenia Castle, as deepening mistrust and hindering UN-led settlement efforts. He stressed the urgency of implementing UN and EU measures to end Turkish Cypriot isolation without delay.
The issue of the football camp’s cancellation was also addressed by Cyprus Football Federation President Haris Loizides, who pointed to a 2013 Zurich agreement involving FIFA and UEFA that integrates Turkish Cypriot football under a single recognized body. Loizides noted that non-compliance with this agreement contributes to ongoing complications in sporting cooperation on the island.
