Mahallart project revitalizes Larnaka’s multicultural neighbourhoods with festivals and community arts
Mahallart, a flagship initiative of Larnaka 2030, is transforming the city’s multicultural neighbourhoods into lively centers of creativity and cultural participation. The project highlights Larnaka’s diverse communities, offering residents and visitors opportunities to engage with local heritage through neighbourhood festivals, performances, and international collaborations with Malta, Belgium, Ukraine, and Montenegro.
Starting in 2024, Mahallart introduced festivals such as Mantomahalart in Agios Ioannis, a historically disadvantaged area, which has grown into an annual celebration uniting local people through workshops, tours, and artistic events. Similar festivals have since emerged in other parts of Larnaka and surrounding villages, fostering community-led cultural experiences rooted in local history and shared stories.
Looking ahead to 2030, Mahallart aims to deepen its European connections by partnering with other European Capitals of Culture and launching exchange programmes. The initiative will also explore modern urban identity challenges via a "digital neighbourhood," collecting and displaying digital nomad stories through AI. Mahallart is set to remain a dynamic hub for community-driven cultural expression beyond 2030 through the Common Ground Arts Center.
