Cyprus-Registered Firms Linked to Russian Espionage Allegations in Slovak Speed Camera Scandal
Three companies registered in Nicosia—Sodasus Ltd, Fidesta Management Ltd, and Fidesta Ltd—are connected to a controversial Slovak government contract for 279 speed cameras suspected to be part of a Russian espionage operation. The cameras, manufactured by Russian firm Simicon, were delivered via a covert supply chain involving Cyprus and Croatia, with technical tests revealing hidden SIM card slots allowing potential remote control by Russian phone numbers.
Slovak authorities suspended the contract after security experts identified the espionage risks, which included the possibility of receiving SMS commands from regions in Russia. The three Cyprus-based firms are owned by Latvian nationals Sens Zalitis and Artis Rozenbergs and primarily offer administrative management services rather than manufacturing. Despite inquiries by Cypriot authorities, no formal investigations or assistance requests have been made by Slovak officials so far.
This scandal, first reported in early August and drawing international media attention, has raised concerns about the security of critical infrastructure within EU nations, especially given past incidents of cyber-attacks linked to Russian intelligence operations. Fidesta Ltd has pledged cooperation with competent authorities and maintained that no unauthorized transactions involving the cameras were authorized by the beneficial owners.
