Cyprus condemns Turkish Cypriot attempt to politicize football camp in occupied north
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman sent letters to key international figures protesting the cancellation of a football camp and festival in Kyrenia, describing it as an effort to isolate Turkish Cypriots. This move was seen as a political tactic to promote the recognition of the breakaway administration, which Cyprus and the international community reject as illegal.
The event was advertised using terms like "Northern Cyprus" and Turkish names for Nicosia, raising concerns about normalizing the separatist entity. Cyprus stresses that while Turkish Cypriot children have the right to play football, international events must not legitimize illegal institutions or undermine UN resolutions which deem the entity unlawful.
Cyprus also defended recent arrests of those exploiting Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied areas, emphasizing that upholding the rule of law is not an obstacle to peace but essential to protect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and the prospect of reunification.
