Limassol businessman and rally legend Dimi Mavropoulos dies in Cape Greco boat accident

Dimi Mavropoulos, a renowned Limassol businessman, international rally driver, and founder of the Cyprus Motor Museum, died after two boats sank in rough seas off Cape Greco last Saturday. Mavropoulos was found unconscious in the wreckage and later pronounced dead at Famagusta General Hospital, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC).

The accident occurred amid severe sea turbulence as three boats encountered difficulties near Agioi Anargyroi. Rescue efforts involved police and military helicopters, patrol boats, fire crews, and ambulances. Six people were rescued, including Mavropoulos’s wife and daughter, who were hospitalized but remain in stable condition.

Born in 1949, Mavropoulos had a celebrated rally career spanning over 45 years, winning the Cyprus Rally Championship multiple times and setting a record in 1990 by winning all events in the season. He founded the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum in 2014, aiming to contribute to his community. The incident took place during an unusually intense storm, with rainfall levels in August expected to exceed 700% of the average.
