Cyprus President Opposes Measures Normalising Current Status, Supports Confidence-Building for Reunification
President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized his opposition to any confidence-building measures that would normalise the current illegal state of affairs in Cyprus. He stated he is ready to support confidence-building efforts that would aid in the reunification of the island and the resolution of the Cyprus problem. Discussions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman included the sensitive issue of four agreed crossing points, which remain deadlocked due to disagreements over location changes proposed by the Greek Cypriot side.
Preparatory work is underway based on the United Nations Secretary-General’s recent visit and suggestions from the European Commission envoy. UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is also expected to return soon for intensive meetings aimed at progress. Both leaders plan separate meetings with Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations General Assembly high-level week next month to update on developments.
Christodoulides affirmed readiness for an enlarged meeting if deemed necessary by Guterres, aiming to resume substantive talks. He underscored the obligation to produce tangible deliverables on confidence-building measures before the New York meetings, highlighting these measures as practical tools to test the viability of future political cooperation and solution on the island.
