EAC denies blocking private PEC power station, cites permit and environmental concerns
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) on Thursday refuted claims that it is obstructing the operation of the private PEC power station near its Vasiliko plant, stating the rival facility lacks necessary environmental and zoning permits. The dispute centers around a pumping station and discharge pipes located on state land leased to the EAC, which PEC uses to discharge processed seawater from turbine cooling.
The EAC expressed concerns that allowing PEC’s hot water discharge near its seawater intake could disrupt the Vasiliko plant's operations. Emphasizing adherence to legal and regulatory procedures, the authority denied deliberately hindering competition but warned it would defend itself against unfounded accusations. PEC maintains its facility is ready and asserts that the land plot in question is unused by EAC.
This ongoing disagreement has included scrutiny from the auditor-general regarding PEC’s permits for its pumping station. While PEC insists all paperwork is in order, the EAC claims the pumping station and discharge pipes are illegal and suggests they should be dismantled. The issue remains unresolved with the land being state-owned and EAC unwilling to sub-let it to PEC.
