Health Insurance Organisation Responds to Criticism After Four-Year-Old’s Death from Meningitis
The health insurance organisation has responded to criticism following the death of a four-year-old boy from meningitis, whose family alleges that a timely diagnosis was not made. The organisation emphasized its commitment to ensuring prompt and quality healthcare access for Gesy beneficiaries, monitoring the performance of contracted hospitals, and intervening when necessary.
The boy, who developed a fever on July 8, was initially hospitalised in Limassol before being transferred to Makarios children’s hospital in Nicosia, apparently suffering brain death en route. The organisation acknowledged that while most hospitalisations—around 27,000 monthly—proceed smoothly, there is room for improvement and necessary actions are being taken.
Protests took place outside Limassol general hospital following the incident. Meanwhile, a formal investigation into the case has been launched by the state health services organisation, Okypy, to address concerns and identify any shortcomings in patient care.
