Cyprus proposes up to 90-day impoundment for e-scooter violations including speeding and underage use
A new draft decree by Cyprus's public works department proposes impounding e-scooters for 30 to 90 days for offenses such as speeding, underage riding, and use in prohibited areas. Executive engineer Haris Christodoulou highlighted that scooters exceeding 25 km/h or used by those under 17 could face seizure. Owners may pay fines to retrieve their scooters after the impound period; otherwise, court proceedings will follow.
Christodoulou noted safety concerns related to e-scooters, including visibility issues due to small size and light placement, along with increased risks on poor road surfaces due to small tires. He emphasized that e-scooters are only permitted on roads with speed limits up to 30 km/h and on cycle paths, which restricts their legal use in most urban centers.
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos outlined municipal plans to expand 30 km/h zones and create designated scooter parking to enhance safety and order. He also warned against rental scooters circumventing GPS restrictions and supported banning high-speed scooters. Despite tighter regulations, Prountzos stressed the importance of micromobility in reducing car use and promoting sustainable urban transport.
