Cyprus Agrees on Enhanced Measures to Tackle Marine Pollution Following Limassol Coastline Complaints
Cyprus has agreed on additional measures to strengthen inspections and improve responses to marine pollution after concerns were raised about waste and substances along Limassol's coastline. The decision follows complaints about foam, unpleasant smells, nappies, sanitary pads, and possible sewage in the sea, particularly near Armonia beach and Moni, where sewage overflow was reported from a treatment plant.
Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanolis, who chaired the meeting with local mayors and officials, stated that Cyprus’ waters remain clean but recognized the need for improvements. New steps include increased inspections, use of technology such as drones, and better coordination among authorities with the aim of enhancing operational readiness by next summer.
Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis emphasized the urgency of the issue, demanding immediate solutions and clear government responsibility. He proposed a rapid-response marine pollution unit to address incidents more effectively. Both mayors stressed that protecting Limassol Bay is vital for the local economy and called for science-based measures and accountability to prevent future pollution.
