Customs seize untaxed tobacco and impose €5,090 fines at Cyprus crossings
Cyprus customs agents seized significant quantities of untaxed tobacco products across three incidents at Ledra Street and Ayios Dhometios crossing points between August 23 and 27. The seized items included rolling tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars lacking the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, security features, and traceability codes.
In the first case, customs officers intercepted a woman carrying 2.25kg of rolling tobacco at Ledra Street, resulting in a €790 out-of-court fine. Subsequent seizures involved two men at Ayios Dhometios crossing: one carrying 2,600 cigarettes and 40 cigars fined €800, and another found with 8,800 cigarettes and 2.575kg of rolling tobacco who agreed to a €3,500 fine.
All confiscated tobacco products are to be destroyed following prescribed procedures. The total out-of-court fines imposed across the three cases amount to €5,090, highlighting ongoing efforts by customs to combat smuggling and ensure tax compliance at border crossings.
