Cyprus Shipping Chamber endorses national AI strategy targeting fuel savings and safety enhancements in maritime sector
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) has expressed support for the proposed National AI Strategy 2032 following a detailed presentation by Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides. The strategy aims to transform Cyprus into a leading trusted AI hub in the eastern Mediterranean. For the shipping industry, specific goals include achieving 10 to 20 percent fuel savings and reducing maintenance costs by 30 to 40 percent through AI applications such as advanced route planning, predictive maintenance, and digital vessel models.
The CSC’s Digitalisation Committee, which focuses on technology impacting ship operations, has contributed its perspective during a meeting with Skourides. Proposed AI tools would assist crews with regulatory compliance, improve coordination between vessels and ports, detect safety risks, and enable a shared maritime data space for anonymized AI training. A maritime center of excellence and supervised testing for autonomous vessels and drones are also part of the plan.
The strategy emphasizes human oversight, requiring professionals to maintain control and authorizing system withdrawal if safety or compliance standards are not met. Public consultation on the draft remains open until August 31, 2026, with feedback expected to shape the final version. The government highlights that successful AI adoption will depend on training, reskilling, and informed use alongside technological investments.
