President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman have agreed to hold weekly meetings, with their next scheduled for September 2, aiming to maintain momentum in resolving the Cyprus problem. This frequent dialogue marks a notable shift toward continuity and steady progress after a long period of stagnation. The upcoming meetings will follow a format focusing on direct discussions between the two leaders, without the presence of the UN Secretary-General’s envoy.
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that this progress results from intensive UN involvement alongside Cyprus’s persistent diplomatic efforts. While optimistic, officials acknowledge significant challenges ahead, notably the crucial role of guarantor powers, especially Turkey, in facilitating substantive negotiations. The agenda is to resume talks from where they were previously interrupted, striving for a comprehensive settlement.
The European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation based on UN resolutions and EU principles. Political parties DISY and AKEL highlighted the importance of concrete results beyond the agreed meeting schedule, stressing the need for tangible steps, including expanding crossing points, to foster a positive political climate and advance the peace process.
