21st Cyprus International Film Festival Features Global Cinema and Local Stories in Nicosia
The 21st Cyprus International Film Festival will take place from September 21 to 25 at the Melina Merkouri Cultural Hall in Nicosia, attracting filmmakers, artists, and film lovers from around the world. This year’s event includes an international competition showcasing new cinematic voices and the world premiere of the Chinese film La Croix (The Crossing) by Hu Xueyang.
The festival emphasizes local narratives with a special tribute to Cyprus and the memories of 1974, featuring documentaries like Panikos Panayiotou’s Queen of Cyprus, which explores themes of loss, resilience, and the determination to rebuild. There is also a focus on women filmmakers and stories, promoting female creativity, equality, and peacebuilding through cultural initiatives.
Additional highlights include the Things We Pass By photography exhibition, inviting public submissions by September 6, and the Monologue Challenge for performers, with applications open until September 16. The festival will conclude with the Golden Aphrodite Awards Ceremony on September 25, honoring outstanding films and filmmakers.
