Six months after Cyprus parliament passed revised legislation governing recreational boating, the law remains unimplemented. The delay follows a serious boating accident off Protaras, which highlighted the urgency of updating safety regulations. Deputy Director of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Kyriakos Aliouris, stated that preparations for full enforcement will begin in September, with procedures and forms developed in collaboration with relevant authorities. The Recreational Navigation Law of 2026 is expected to be introduced in stages due to the complexity of its provisions. Meanwhile, DISY parliamentary spokesman Dimitris Dimitriou criticized the process, highlighting the absence of a specified implementation timetable in the law and lack of prior public consultation. These shortcomings led to challenges in reaching a consensus during parliamentary discussions, delaying the law's full application.
