Environmental Department Confirms Excellent Swimming Water Quality Despite Localized Microbiological Concerns
The Department of Environment has confirmed that the quality of swimming waters across tested areas in Cyprus remains excellent, despite recent concerns and media reports. Continuous monitoring during the swimming season, from May 1 to October 31, ensures rigorous water quality assessments.
An intensified monitoring program is in place for 2026 in Famagusta, Limassol, and the Mackenzie area of Larnaca, following complaints from last season. Additional sampling has been conducted in Limassol due to foaming and discoloration, with investigations ongoing in cooperation with relevant maritime and chemical authorities. No microbiological contamination linked to these phenomena has been detected to date.
Regarding allegations of wastewater discharge near the Moni Treatment Station, elevated microbiological loads were found only in samples very close to the station, with no impact on adjacent popular swimming sites. The Department will maintain heightened inspections and swiftly address any violations, ensuring continued public health and safety.
