Greek Deputy Foreign Minister affirms Great Sea Interconnector project proceeds without Turkey's approval
Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou confirmed that the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, aimed at linking the energy grids of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, will advance without needing permission from Turkey. He emphasized that the project is a peaceful infrastructure initiative connecting Europe with the Middle East and is supported by international law.
Chatzivasileiou highlighted the recent majority stake acquisition by French firm Meridiam as a strong vote of confidence, ensuring the project's safety. Despite ongoing tensions regarding disputed waters between Greece and Turkey, planning continues as normal. Around 60% of seabed surveys have been completed, with the remaining section located in contested maritime areas.
The maritime dispute arises over whether islands generate exclusive economic zones (EEZs). Greece and Cyprus, referencing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, claim islands establish EEZs, while Turkey disputes this position, claiming the waters between Cyprus and Crete fall under its jurisdiction. Greece is prepared to respond firmly to any provocations in these disputed areas.
