Legal service clears journalist Makarios Drousiotis' fundraising campaign of wrongdoing
The legal service has found no issues with the financial support raised by journalist Makarios Drousiotis to cover his legal defense costs. This follows an investigation prompted by concerns from the fundraising licensing authority and subsequent police inquiry. The opinion confirmed that the campaign does not violate relevant laws and that no criminal offenses require further investigation, effectively closing the case.
The interior ministry became involved after media reports highlighted Drousiotis’ public fundraising appeal, forwarding concerns to the police to determine whether any legislation had been breached. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou emphasized that the ministry acted only upon learning of the campaign and assured that no prosecution would occur if the investigation found no legal violations.
Drousiotis launched the fundraising effort to cover legal expenses linked to criminal proceedings in the 'Sandy' case and separate allegations related to the Mafia State affair. His campaign raised over €50,000 within 36 hours, with Drousiotis committing the funds to be used solely for legal costs and audited transparently by an approved firm.
