Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus to hold annual progress briefings from January 2027
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) announced it will begin holding annual briefings starting January 2027 to update the public on its progress in identifying missing persons. This initiative reflects the commitment of President Nikos Christodoulides and the government to ascertain the fate of the last missing individuals from the island's conflict.
The briefings will be conducted yearly in late January and addressed to relatives of missing persons, relevant authorities, the media, and the public. They will cover the CMP's yearly activities, excavation and investigation outcomes, and future plans, including presentations by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics on identification procedures.
Since its establishment in 1981 and operational commencement in 2006, the CMP has exhumed 1,719 bodies and identified 1,298 individuals, returning remains for dignified burials. The project continues to rely on EU funding and donor support to carry out its bi-communal efforts between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.
