Second fatal drowning near Larnaca breakwaters raises urgent safety concerns
A second drowning incident occurred near breakwaters at a Larnaca beach in mid-August, despite prior written warnings from local organisations following the tragic deaths of two Somali women in June at Oroklini. The latest victim, a 35-year-old Romanian mother, died while her 12-year-old daughter remains in critical condition after both were pulled from the water at CTO beach. Both incidents happened in areas where sharp sea drops and strong underwater currents exist, yet no safety measures had been implemented.
Local authorities, including the Larnaca Tourism Development Company and municipality, had urged action after the first tragedy, recommending permanent safety signage and floating rescue equipment near the breakwaters. However, no measures were taken before the second fatality. The Larnaca mayor has since promised to install warning signs in the Oroklini area, though CTO beach lies outside municipal boundaries.
Compounding safety concerns, lifeguard coverage in Larnaca is set to decrease further from September, with fewer towers staffed as seasonal contracts end. The absence of clear responsibility for sea and breakwater safety has contributed to delayed responses, leaving beachgoers at increased risk in these hazardous waters.
