Cyprus Leaders Hold Extended Meeting to Prepare for Expanded Cyprus Talks
The recent meeting between the leaders of Cyprus, initially scheduled for one hour, extended to three hours as they engaged in detailed discussions aimed at preparing for a new expanded conference on the Cyprus issue. Central to these talks was the review and recording of previous negotiation outcomes up to the suspension at Crans-Montana, a critical foundation for the upcoming talks.
Victor Papadopoulos, Director of the President's Press Office, emphasized that a key milestone will be the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September. The President of Cyprus is open to a possible tripartite meeting with the UN Secretary-General at the UN headquarters if necessary.
The discussions also focused on identifying issues where quick decisions can be made so that concrete results can be presented to the UN Secretary-General by the time of the General Assembly. The dialogue was described as sincere and comprehensive, going well beyond confidence-building measures and addressing the methodology and conditions necessary for a meaningful resumption of negotiations.
