FC Barcelona postpones youth training camp in Cyprus’s occupied north after diplomatic protests
FC Barcelona has postponed a planned training camp by its academy in the northern part of Cyprus, a region occupied and internationally unrecognized. This decision follows diplomatic interventions, including a formal protest from the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), which urged the club to relocate the event to government-controlled areas or cancel it entirely. The CFA acted in consultation with UEFA, stressing that holding the camp in the occupied north would violate legal and regulatory frameworks.
CFA president Charis Loizidis sent a letter to the Spanish Football Federation and copied UEFA and FC Barcelona, requesting immediate reconsideration. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman commented that participation in events in the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus does not imply recognition of the entity. He stressed the importance of sports as a means of building trust between communities and criticized the politicization of youth sporting events.
Earlier, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay had publicly supported FC Barcelona’s decision to hold the camp in the occupied region. The CFA has stated it will continue to monitor the situation and take further action if necessary.
