Cyprus Farming Groups Endorse 2027-2038 Livestock Sector Rebuild Program
Cyprus’ main farming organisations have endorsed a proposed programme to revitalize the island’s livestock sector from 2027 to 2038, urging the government to expedite implementation. The initiative, presented to President Nikos Christodoulides by a scientific committee led by Stavros Malas, aims to address vulnerabilities exposed by the recent foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
The programme emphasizes significant investment in sheep, goat, and cattle farming, with measures focusing on biosecurity, animal welfare, environmental protection, genetic improvement, and scientific support. The groups also highlighted the need to develop organised meat production and fattening units, which currently lag behind in Cyprus.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that the proposals will be shared with stakeholders for feedback before finalisation. The president has instructed a thorough review process to ensure a constructive exchange of views, aiming to implement the committee’s comprehensive medium- and long-term restructuring plan.
