Japanese Koto Music Recital Debuts in Cyprus on September 9 in Nicosia
On September 9, Nicosia will host Cyprus's first Japanese music recital featuring the traditional koto instrument. The event, organized by the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus and The Cyprus Institute, will take place at the Costas Stefanis Amphitheatre and showcase uk-based koto player Aki Kitagawa. Known for his performances on the Ikuta-ryū koto, Kitagawa will present a diverse repertoire including traditional, classical, contemporary, and original compositions.
The koto, a traditional Japanese zither with a long wooden body and thirteen strings, has been integral to Japanese musical culture for centuries. Historically linked to the Japanese imperial court, it remains popular in various cultural settings. Kitagawa’s performance aims to introduce the unique sounds and evolving traditions of the koto to Cypriot audiences.
The recital is free of charge but requires online reservations. This special event offers a rare opportunity for attendees to experience a distinctive element of Japanese heritage in Cyprus.
