Cyprus expands all-day school programme to 381 schools with €6 million funding
The number of all-day schools in Cyprus has increased to 381 from 220 in 2023, education authorities announced. This expansion comes ahead of the new school year in September and is supported by a €6 million budget, reflecting a government commitment to improve educational services.
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou emphasized that the expansion goes beyond mere numbers to include substantial improvements in teacher working conditions. Teachers participating in the programme now have contracts through the educational service committee and follow structured schedules. Additionally, school principals will oversee both morning and afternoon lessons, with regular inspections by ministerial officials.
The programme builds on a pilot project started at the Ayios Dhometios gymnasium in Nicosia, combining academic support with creative activities. It aligns with the EU's educational goals to reduce low achievement and early school leaving, while also helping parents, especially single mothers, remain in the workforce by alleviating after-school care needs.
