Cyprus Cabinet Approves National Multiple Sclerosis Strategy to Improve Care and Diagnosis
The Cyprus cabinet has approved a comprehensive national strategy aimed at enhancing the care and support for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides announced. The strategy includes the creation of a national registry, promotion of early diagnosis, investment in rehabilitation, and expanded research efforts. Currently, nearly 3,000 people in Cyprus live with MS, with approximately 100 new cases diagnosed annually.
The newly formed committee will serve as an advisory body with specific objectives and timelines, ensuring a structured approach to improving care quality. This initiative aims to establish a modern, people-centred framework addressing the real needs of MS patients and improving their quality of life. Multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord, causing symptoms such as fatigue, blurred vision, and muscle cramps, and has no known cure.
Additionally, upcoming legislation is set to increase disability benefits and remove income restrictions that previously excluded some affected individuals from state support. Advocacy groups have long called for better healthcare professional training and greater research investment to reduce diagnosis delays and improve patient outcomes.
