Cyprus Football Association urges Barcelona to cancel children's football camp in northern Cyprus
The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has urged FC Barcelona to cancel a planned children's football camp scheduled to take place in northern Cyprus, considered occupied territory by the Republic of Cyprus. CFA chairman Haris Loizides wrote to Barcelona's Spanish counterpart Rafael Louzan, requesting intervention to prevent the camp, organized by a Barcelona-affiliated academy in Istanbul, from proceeding there. The camp is set to be held at Near East University’s facilities in northern Nicosia next month.
The CFA, in consultation with UEFA, highlighted that holding the camp in the occupied territories violates current legal and regulatory frameworks. First division club Nea Salamina also appealed directly to Barcelona, emphasizing the historic and symbolic importance of respecting the island's division and urging the club to relocate the camp to the government-controlled areas or cancel it altogether.
Barcelona’s historical ties to Catalan identity and political expression make the situation especially sensitive. Meanwhile, Cyprus' football scene remains divided, reflecting the island's ongoing political conflict, with separate football associations for Greek and Turkish Cypriots and attempts at reunification yet to succeed.
