Businessman Accuses Nicosia Authorities of Inaction Over Dangerous Former Othello Cinema Building
A businessman renting a store in the former Othello cinema building in Engomi has condemned the Nicosia district local government (EOA) for failing to address the structural dangers of the building. Despite the building being officially classified as dangerous since October 2025 and multiple warnings, EOA has yet to enforce fines or take substantial corrective measures, leaving staff and customers exposed to daily risks.
The building, marked with danger signs and fenced off, suffers from extensive structural damage, accumulated rubbish, and health hazards like infestations and stagnant water. While the majority owner has initiated demolition procedures, progress has stalled. Nicosia EOA president confirmed plans to secure parts of the building and maintain communication with the owner, but funding delays and legislative setbacks have hampered comprehensive action.
Technical experts have criticized authorities for procrastination, calling for mandatory structural inspections to prevent similar hazards. Currently, Nicosia district lists 656 dangerous buildings, with ongoing challenges in managing the risks posed by these structures.
