Four Cypriots summit Mount Elbrus raising Cyprus and Anti-Cancer Society flags
A team of four Cypriots successfully reached the summit of Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest peak, on August 23, where they raised both the Cyprus national flag and the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society flag. The expedition, which began on August 19 in Azau village, Russia, was dedicated to supporting those affected by cancer across Cyprus, a cause close to the group’s hearts.
The team underwent a rigorous acclimatisation process, including climbs on Mount Cheget and the Pastukhov Rocks, before making their final summit attempt starting at 10 p.m. on August 22 and finishing by 9:45 a.m. the following day. They noted the significant challenges posed by high altitude and rapidly changing weather conditions, but took extensive precautions, studying routes and past incidents to ensure safety.
Beyond the physical achievement, the climbers expressed deep emotional connection to their cause, feeling that raising the Anti-Cancer Society flag symbolically carried the hopes and memories of those impacted by cancer.
