Deputy Minister emphasizes youth inclusion in digital policy shaping Cyprus' tech future
Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou highlighted the importance of involving young people in decisions about technology that will impact their future jobs, education, and online safety during a discussion at UCLan Cyprus. The event was part of the 20th National Session of the European Youth Parliament Cyprus (EYP Cyprus) held in Larnaca and focused on digitalisation, employment opportunities, and protection of minors online.
Damianou stressed that technology and innovation have become integral to everyday life and economic progress, urging policymakers to listen to youth perspectives. This conversation coincided with an EU assessment praising Cyprus' digital infrastructure, including extensive gigabit connectivity and full 5G coverage, though it noted slow adoption of artificial intelligence and varying digital skills.
Cyprus is pursuing a national digital roadmap backed by €980 million, emphasizing infrastructure and digital skills enhancement. However, only 14.9% of tertiary students study STEM compared to the EU average of 26.9%, raising concerns about meeting future employment demand in tech-related fields. Initiatives such as research internships and startup support aim to bridge this gap. Online safety remains a priority, with strong public support for enhanced child protection measures and policies for age verification on digital platforms.
