Unficyp facilitates religious visits to build trust and overcome division in Cyprus
The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp) continues to facilitate religious visits as part of its mission to build trust and overcome division between communities on the island. On Wednesday, 80 Turkish Cypriots visited the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque in Larnaca, marking another step towards reconnecting people with their faith and heritage.
Unficyp spokesperson Siddique Aleem emphasized that allowing access to religious sites has always been a confidence-building measure. "The goal is to help build trust between communities and overcome division," he said. This approach aligns with Unficyp's long-standing objective to create opportunities for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots to engage and foster closer ties.
Munehiko Harada, Unficyp’s head of political affairs, described such visits as vital to their work in strengthening relations. He noted that coordinating these religious ceremonies does more than facilitate access; it helps bridge a divide that has kept communities apart for decades, advancing efforts for peace and reconciliation on the island.
