Municipalities in Cyprus are permitted to install security cameras in public spaces for safety and protection, but they are required to conduct a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) impact study beforehand. The study must be submitted to the data protection authority, according to commissioner Maria Christofidou. She emphasized that surveillance cameras should be used as a last resort, with recording limited to necessary content, and that public notification and data protection measures must be in place.
CCTV systems can help prevent vandalism, fires, and environmental risks when aligned with GDPR and national laws. The authority must specify retention periods, access control, and security procedures for the footage. Christofidou confirmed her office is currently evaluating submissions from municipal authorities to ensure compliance.
Following repeated vandalism incidents, Paphos acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou advocated for expedited installation of cameras in parks and public areas to protect municipal property and enhance safety. He stressed that legal requirements should not hinder prompt action, pledging to advance the matter through relevant channels to safeguard public spaces and reassure residents.
