Cyprus expected to achieve 30% increase in barley yield in 2024
Cyprus is projected to see a substantial rise in barley yield this year, according to the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). The JRC forecasts a barley yield of 2.28 tonnes per hectare for 2024, marking a 30% increase over the five-year average of 1.76 tonnes and a 144% jump compared to last year.
The forecast highlights barley as the main crop grown on Cyprus, primarily for animal feed, and cultivated predominantly on the fertile plains of the Mesaoria region. Despite a challenging outlook for much of Europe due to heatwaves and drought, Cyprus is expected to buck the trend with a strong barley harvest.
The JRC’s monthly crop monitoring bulletin covers only crops grown on more than 10,000 hectares, which excludes other Cypriot staples such as wheat, maize, and potatoes. Barley remains a significant part of Cyprus' agricultural sector, occupying about a quarter of the island’s arable land.
