Kalia Antoniou wins Cyprus' first gold at Mediterranean Games with 100m freestyle victory
Swimmer Kalia Antoniou secured Cyprus' first gold medal of the 2024 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, by winning the 100m freestyle final for the second consecutive year. Antoniou finished with a time of 54.6 seconds, narrowly beating Italy’s Chiara Tarantino by 0.07 seconds, while Spain’s Ainho Campabadal Amezcua took bronze.
Antoniou expressed pride in her achievement, noting she met one of her two goals by clinching gold and aims to achieve both a personal best and another victory in the upcoming 50m freestyle event. Her win continues Cyprus’ streak of winning at least one gold medal at every Mediterranean Games since 2001.
On Tuesday, Antoniou will compete again in the 50m freestyle, with fellow Cypriot swimmers Nikolas Antoniou and Andrew Marcus Laghoutis participating in the men’s event. Additional Cypriot athletes, including Maria Erokhina in swimming, the men’s handball team, gymnasts Maria Sokolova and Maria Avgousti, padel players Sergios Kyratzis and Maria Siopacha, and trap shooters Yiannis Ailiotis and Andreas Makri, will also compete throughout the day.
