Kato Pyrgos Green Community Solar Project Delayed by Bureaucracy and Budget Cuts
The government’s initiative to turn Kato Pyrgos and the Tillyria region into a model green community has faced significant delays due to bureaucratic hurdles and unexplained budget reductions. Originally allocated €2.2 million for installing solar panels on 100 buildings in 2024, the funding was cut to €1.5 million after consultant payments, raising concerns among residents and local officials.
The project aims to provide free or low-cost solar-generated electricity to households and businesses, incentivizing investment in agriculture, livestock, and tourism while encouraging former villagers to return. Despite President Nikos Christodoulides pledging over €20 million for broader revitalization efforts, progress remains slow as no official has been appointed to lead the project.
Local leader Nikos Kleanthous announced plans to hold a village assembly for interested residents and businesses to join a managing company for the solar energy. About 240 stakeholders have expressed interest, with hopes to complete the initial installations by the end of next year. The government emphasizes the need for clear leadership to move the initiative forward and achieve the region’s climate-neutrality goals.
