Neapolis University Paphos Human Rights Observatory Commences Second Year with Expanded Research and Public Engagement
The Human Rights Observatory at Neapolis University Paphos has officially entered its second year, continuing its mission to monitor and promote human rights in Cyprus. Established in 2024, it is the only university observatory on the island solely devoted to human rights research, education, and public debate. The Observatory focuses on academic inquiry, student involvement, and increasing awareness through evidence-based knowledge.
During the 2024/25 academic year, the Observatory produced five thematic studies covering Cyprus's legislative framework, European Court of Human Rights rulings, and issues affecting the LGBTQI+ community and persons with disabilities. It also hosted impactful awareness initiatives such as the “Wall of Silence” and a symposium addressing hate speech and disinformation, aiming to foster open dialogue among students, academics, and the wider community.
Headed by Dr Eleni Gavriel, the Observatory seeks to bridge academic research and society by providing accessible resources that contribute to informed public discourse and policy-making. Looking forward, it plans to deepen research activities, expand partnerships locally and internationally, and further integrate human rights education within university programs.
