Former Turkish Cypriot leader criticizes Greek Cypriot cooperation stance ahead of key talks
Former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat criticized the Greek Cypriot side for consistently avoiding cooperation with Turkish Cypriots, citing concerns that collaboration would enhance the Turkish side's international visibility. Talat highlighted ongoing indirect cooperation between police forces and the interconnected electricity network, but stressed that the Greek Cypriots deliberately downplay such cooperation.
With a meeting scheduled between Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, Talat emphasized the need for practical steps toward a solution, noting that a comprehensive resolution under the UN framework appears difficult at present. He urged the Turkish side to project a willingness for compromise to the international community, recalling past failures blamed on Greek Cypriot actions.
Talat also addressed recent arrests related to property disputes, condemning the prolonged detention of a German national and predicting complications for the Greek Cypriot side due to potential European Court of Human Rights involvement. He defended the effectiveness of the Turkish Cypriot Immovable Property Commission, which has processed thousands of claims and awarded substantial compensation, as a viable remedy for property issues stemming from the Cyprus conflict.
