Paphos summer wood pigeon hunt begins amid concerns over limited game and hunting areas
Hunters gathered in Paphos at dawn on Sunday for the first summer wood pigeon hunting season of the year, though many reported limited game and voiced worries about shrinking hunting zones. Despite strong participation, the availability of birds was low, leading to calls for reviewing hunting area restrictions.
Veteran hunter Andreas Krotalias described the situation as increasingly challenging due to overcrowding and reduced accessible land, citing the impact of prohibited zones and bird sanctuaries. He questioned whether conditions justified holding the current season and urged authorities to better consider environmental and weather factors when issuing hunting permits.
Others, such as Andreas Papagapiou and Evros Michaelides, echoed concerns about scarce game and requested expanded hunting grounds, suggesting that areas open for hare and partridge hunting be allowed for wood pigeons as well. The Cyprus hunting federation reminded hunters of the ban on turtle dove and quail hunting for the first two summer outings and emphasized mandatory catch recording through the Artemis Cy mobile app.
