The Cyprus Police will launch a nationwide road safety campaign from August 24 to August 30, 2026, focusing on motorists using mobile phones or holding other objects while driving. This behavior is identified as a significant contributor to fatal and serious road collisions, prompting the intensive enforcement effort.
Throughout the week, traffic police will conduct roadside checks with a focus on distracted drivers, alongside public information campaigns about the risks involved. Mobile phone use while driving greatly reduces reaction times, making it one of the leading causes of road accidents.
Data from 2023 to 2025 show that careless and distracted driving accounted for 22.1% of road deaths and 29.4% of serious injuries, underscoring the urgency of this campaign to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities and injuries across Cyprus.
