Paphos Hospital Faces Resident Pressure Over Executive Director Delay and Canteen Closure
Residents of Paphos have expressed frustration over ongoing delays at Paphos General Hospital, specifically the prolonged closure of the hospital canteen and the absence of an executive director. The canteen has remained closed for six years, depriving visitors of basic refreshments and accessible facilities like toilets. Despite repeated assurances from the health ministry since April, no significant progress has been made.
Diko MP Chrysanthos Savvides has raised the issue in parliament, questioning Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides on the status of recruiting an executive director to grant the hospital greater administrative independence from Limassol Hospital. Savvides criticized the prolonged lack of action, warning that residents might take matters into their own hands if the canteen remains closed beyond September.
Authorities have indicated plans to issue a new tender with revised terms to attract operators, but concerns remain about the business's viability given the hospital's visitor numbers. Additionally, a proposed legislative framework for the executive director role has been delayed for over a year, further compounding administrative challenges at the facility.
